William J. Lane was born March 23, 1967 in Newark, New Jersey.  Mr. Lane was educated in his hometown up to the age of eleven, when he dropped out of school and started working for a local crockery store.  Later he served as an office boy and finally became an employee of the American Tract Society in New York City.

He came to Fargo in 1886, where he was first employed in a mortgage and loan business, and then he worked for the First National Bank of Fargo from 1887 to 1897.  From 1891-1892 he was the owner of Lane’s Photograph Gallery with A. H. Kahlert as manager. 

Mr. Lane later went on to work for the Fargo Loan Agency from 1897 to 1902.  He was engaged in the real estate business prior to starting his own business in 1916, called the W.J. Lane Company.

Mr. Lane served as the director of the Fargo YMCA for twenty years.  He was also very active in community affairs and the Presbyterian Church.  Mr. Lane was married to Elizabeth Benson on July 13, 1892, and they had four children, Florence, Clinton Clarence, Rose, and Dorothy.

William J. Lane died during a speaking engagement in Devils Lake, North Dakota on October 15, 1931.
