Robert Stene was a brother to Charles F. Stene.  He was born in May of 1872 in Minnesota. In June 1897 Robert becomes a partner with Hans T. Hanson as Hanson & Stene with their studio at 508 Front Street.

In January 1897 they apparently part, and Stene takes over the studio on Front Street. This studio also went by the name The Fargo Portrait and Art Studio. By 1898 the city directory lists Robert as living and having a studio at 5th Street and 1st Avenue South, and Charles is also living there.

According to the 1898 business gazetteer, Robert Stene also had branch studios in Oakes and Lidgerwood, North Dakota.  By 1899 Robert is no longer listed as living in Fargo. In the 1900 census he was working as a photographer in Stephenville, Texas. In the 1910 census he was living with his brother Charles in San Mateo, California and in 1930, he was living in New York City.

People known to have worked for Robert M. Stene:

Lloyd, A. J.
A. J. Lloyd is listed as working for Stene around April of 1897. In the Fargo Forum & Daily Republican he was called a first-class photo artist, and excellent "poser in fancy posing and high art". Mr. Lloyd cannot be found in the city directories of the time period, so he must not have been with Stene for very long.

Clinkinbeard, W. H.
The January 18, 1898 Fargo Forum and Daily Republican states the following "W. H. Clinkinbeard arrived in the city from Lincoln, Neb., yesterday to take charge of the photograph gallery of R. M. Stene. Mr. Clinkinbeard brings with him strong recommendations as a first-class photographer, having had a studio in that city until recently."
