Four-County Cemeteries

"Four-County Cemeteries." Kulm Messenger, 4 April 2007, 1.

The Germans from Russia Heritage Society [GRHS] has been able, through a lot of volunteers, to make available pertinent information for genealogical research by those whose heritage goes back to Southern Russia. A new phase is now arising where volunteers are being asked to be resource people for specific areas in the United States. Because I am actively contributing information and articles to the GRHS, I have been asked to serve as a source of information for the greater Kulm community. I was born in Pomona View Township [LaMoure Co.] some 60+ years ago. My parents left the Kulm area in the early 1950s and my own life as a missionary/pastor, took me far away from this community. However, in my retirement, I find a desire to do something of service for “my people” back in North Dakota. I have already begun by writing to each church in the Kulm/Fredonia area and asking for access to their church records. A few replied, but most did not. Guess I have a little more public relations work to do to achieve that goal.

My plan is to come to the Kulm area this summer and spend a few weeks talking to the powers that be in each congregation. But in my bigger project now is to focus on cemeteries. Some counties have a fine record of the cemeteries in their area, precise locations and names & dates of those buried there. Other counties either have no work in progress to gather such information, or are just getting into it. I would like to use this article to provide the local readership with a list of cemeteries I came across on the internet for the counties of Dickey, LaMoure, Logan and McIntosh. If you are aware of other cemeteries in the county, I would appreciate a word from you. Not only big cemeteries, but also those smaller pioneer plots, or even a burial plot of just one person. Hopefully, you will contact me either by mail: Allen Konrad, P.O. Box 157, Rowley, IA 52329 or by email: <onamission@lbt.org>; providing me with answers to the questions I list at the end of this article. An early response would be appreciated.

The questions I hope some of you will be able to answer are these:

1. Are there any of the listed cemeteries above that are known by another name? If so, what?
2. If someone wants to see the records, what is the mailing address of their location?
3. What cemetery or burial plot is not listed in the 4 counties mentioned above?
4. What is the cemetery’s location (either Latitude/Longitude, or Range/Township/Section/Quarter)
5. What is the address of the place where this cemetery’s record is kept?
