NDSU Libraries Announces Recipe Index Search

The Germans from Russia Heritage Collection (GRHC), North Dakota State University Libraries, Fargo, is pleased to announce the new "Recipe Index Search" at the website: library.ndsu.edu/grhc. The search will allow anyone to locate more than 20,000 recipes included in the cookbooks currently available for purchase at the GRHC website. For example, one can locate 34 recipe titles for Knoepfla Soup and 91 recipe titles for Strudel.

Recipes may be ordered at the Archived Recipe Index Search. This search will allow a person to locate more than 6,000 individual German-Russian recipe titles. These recipe titles are included in the cookbooks that are currently cataloged in the Germans from Russia Heritage Collection.

The Recipe Index Search includes: Categories for Recipe Index Search; Dictionary of German-Russian Food Terms; Metric and United States Conversion Charts; and Ukrainian Pronunciation for Foods.

The search includes recipe titles from a variety of ethnic backgrounds, such as Bessarabian, Black Sea, German, Russian, Ukrainian, Mennonite, Hutterite, Volga, Crimean, the Northern and Central Plains of the United States and Canada, and other miscellaneous recipes. The cookbook title, recipe category, recipe name, page number, and person who submitted the recipe are available through this search.

Dr. Thomas Isern, professor of history, NDSU, writes in his weekly column, Plains Talk, Bismarck Tribune, February, 1, 2003: "If you need to rustle up some German-Russian cusine at home, let me draw your attention to a new service offered by the Germans from Russia Heritage Collection (GRHC) at NDSU. It's an amazing recipe index providing references to the cookbooks offered for sale by GRHC. A search for Kuchen procures 191 matches."

Kristi Krebs Brink, NDSU graduate in public history employed at GRHC, states: "This search will help anyone looking to find a specific recipe title, including which cookbooks contain the recipe. It will be a wonderful addition to the GRHC website. While indexing, I found a recipe for Homemade Cottage Cheese for Strudel from my grandmother, Charlotte Dobitz Krebs, New England, ND."
