Pfeffernüss' (Pepper Cookies)

Adapted from Hulda Wacker family heritage, Ashley, ND and Long
Lake, SD.
1 c. honey
1/2 c. buttermilk
1 c. brown sugar
1/2 c. cream
1 c. shortening
2 tsp. baking soda
2 eggs
1 tsp. star arise
flour
optional: 1/4 tsp. cardamon
Mix well and add enough flour to make soft dough. Shape into balls
of walnut size. Place on baking sheet. Bake for 8-10 minutes at
375° F.
