Holy Cross Church, dedicated to the Holy Cross, was built in 1917-1918,
of native limestone at a cost of $56,000.00 and was solemnly blessed
and dedicated on May 3, 1918. It was built under the direction of
Rev. Father Peter Burkard. It stands as a lasting monument to the
strong and lively faith of the people whose generosity and self-denial
have made its erection possible.
The following is an English translation from Father Peter Burkard's
original about the dedication of Holy Cross Church.
“This was a great day of joy
and jubilation, in the midst of war chaos, for the people of Pfeifer,
as well as all Ellis County Catholics and the surrounding areas
in which all of them heartily participated.”
