Parents: Ludwig
and Christina Welk, German Immigrants. Father a farmer - Lawrence
sixth of eight children.
- Education: Four years of grammer school, cut
short by peritonitis. Spent one year convalescing.
- Began Career: March 11, 1924 - 21st Birthday.
- 1925-1927: With George T. Kelly and The Peerless
Entertainers.
- 1927-1937: Band performed regularly over WNAX,
Yankton, South Dakota.
- April 18, 1931: Married Fern Renner - three
children (Shirley, Donna and Larry) (ten grandchildren).
- Dec. 31, 1938: Debut at William Penn Hotel,
Pittsburgh, Pa. Found name of "Champagne Music of Lawrence
Welk."
- 1940-1950: Trianon Ballroom in Chicago.
- 1951-1955: KTLA - local television in Los Angeles
from the Aragon Ballroom.
- 1955-1982: National Television: 16 years on
ABC - 11 years of syndication.
- 1983-????: Currently on national television
with "Memories With Lawrence Welk".
