8-Point Star Motif for Tablecloth

Materials:

  • 1.4 mm steel crochet hook (Susan Bates size 8)
  • White, size 20 cotton crochet thread – allow 25 yds for each 3¼-inch motif

ch=chain
sl st: = slip stitch
YO = yarn over
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
TC = triple crochet
QC = quad crochet (YO three times)

3-QC Cluster (worked over 3 DC): With one loop on hook, YO three times, pull thread through first DC. Work )pick up thread and pull through 2 loops on hook) 3 times – retain loop on hook. YO three times, pull thread through 2nd DC, work (pick up thread and pull through 2 loops on hook) 3 times - retain loop on hook. YO three times, pull thread through 3rd DC, work (pick up thread and pull through 2 loops on hook) 3 times – retain loop on hook. Pick
up thread and pull through all 4 loops now on hook [3-QC Cluster made].

To Start: Ch 6. Join with sl st in 1st chain to form beginning ring.

Row 1: Ch 4. Holding one loop on hook, work (2 QC Cluster) in beginning ring, drawing thread through all 3 loops on hook to finish cluster. Ch 5. Work (3-QC Cluster, Ch 5) seven more times in beg. ring, ending with sl st in top of first QC-Cluster to join. [8 Clusters in all]

Row 2: Ch 1. *Work (3 SC, Ch 1) twice in next Ch 5 space.* Repeat from * around, joining at end of row with sl st in beg Ch 1 space.

Row 3: Ch 1. Turn work. Work SC in Ch 1 space. Turn work. Ch 5. *Skip next 3 SC. SC in next Ch 1 space. Ch 5.* Repeat from * around, joining at end of row with Ch 2 and DC in beg SC.

Row 4: Ch 5. *SC in next Ch 5 loop. Ch 5.* Repeat from * around, joining at end of row with sl st in last DC of Row 3.

Row 5: SC in next Ch 5 loop. *Ch 3. Work 7 TC in same Ch 5 loop. Ch 2. SC in next Ch 5
loop. Ch 2.* Repeat from * around, working TC in place of initial Ch 3. Join at end of row with sl st in 3rd chain of beg Ch 3.


Row 6: *Ch 4. DC in next TC. Work (Ch 1. DC in next DC) six times. Ch 1. Skip next Ch 2 space. DC in next SC. Ch 1. Skip next Ch 2 space. DC in next TC. Work (Ch 1, DC) in each of next 7 TC. Ch 1. Skip next Ch 2 space. Work (DC, Ch 2, DC) in next SC. Ch 1. Skip next Ch 2 space.* Repeat from * around, working (DC, Ch 1) in place of beg Ch 4 (in first TC). Join at end of row with sl st in 3rd chain of beg Ch 4.

Row 7: Sl St into next Ch 1 space and into next DC. *Ch 4. DC in next DC. Work (Ch 1, DC) in each of next 4 DC. Skip last DC. Ch 4. Skip next Ch 1 space. Work SC in next DC. Ch 4. Skip next Ch 1 space and next (DC, Ch 1). DC in next DC. Work (Ch 1, DC) in each of next 5 DC. Skip last DC. Ch 3. Skip next Ch 1 space. Work (TC, Ch 3, TC) in next Ch 2 space. Ch 3. Skip next Ch 1 space and next (DC, Ch 1).* Repeat from * around, working (DC, Ch 1) in place of beginning Ch 4. Join at end of row with sl st into 3rd chain of beg Ch 4.

Row 8: Sl st into next Ch 1 space and into next DC. *Ch 4. DC in next DC. Work (Ch 1, DC) in each of next 2 DC. Ch 4. Work (SC in next Ch 4 space. Ch 4) two times. Skip next (DC, Ch 1). DC in next DC. Work (Ch 1, DC) in each of next 3 DC. Ch 4. Skip next Ch 3 space. Work (TC, Ch 3, TC, Ch 4, TC, Ch 3, TC) in next Ch 3 space. Ch 4. Skip next Ch 3 space and next (DC, Ch 1).* Repeat from * around, working (DC, Ch 1) in place of beginning Ch 4. Join at end of row with sl st in 3rd chain of beg Ch 4.

Row 9: *Ch 3. Holding loop on hook, work (3-TC Cluster) over next 3 DC, drawing thread through all four loops on hook to form cluster. Work (Ch 3, DC) in each of next three Ch 4 loops. Ch 3. Work (4-TC Cluster) over next 4 DC. Ch 4. Skip next Ch 4 space. Work (TC in next TC. Ch 3) twice. Work (3-QC Cluster, Ch 5, 3-QC Cluster) in next Ch 4 space. Ch 3. TC in next TC. Ch 3. TC in next TC. Ch 4.* Repeat from * around, working 4 TC Cluster in place of beg (Ch 3, 3-TC Cluster). Join at end of row with sl st in top of beg TC Cluster. Break off thread.

For remaining motifs:

Work Rows 1-8 as for first motif. Work Row 9 up to the corner cluster. Work (3-QC Cluster) in Ch 4 space. Ch 2. Sl st in 3rd ch of corner Ch 5 on adjoining motif, to join. Ch 2. Work (3-QC Cluster) in same Ch 4 space. Ch 2. Sl st in matching Ch 3 space of adjoining motif. Ch 1. TC in next TC. Ch 1. Sl st in Ch 3 space of adjoining motif. Ch 1. TC in next TC. Ch 2. Sl st in Ch 4 space of adjoining motif. Ch 2. Work (4-TC Cluster) over next 4 DC. Ch 2. Sl st in Ch 3 space of adjoining motif. Ch 1. DC in next Ch 4 space. Ch 1. Sl st in Ch 3 space of adjoining motif. Ch 1. DC in next Ch 4 space. Ch 1. Sl st in next Ch 3 space of adjoining motif. Ch 2. Work (4-TC Cluster) over next 4 DC. Ch 2. When project is desired size, weave in and trim all loose ends. Hand wash in mild soap and cool water, rinse well. Blot by rolling in a towel, then lay flat on dry towel(s), smoothing and stretching to original size and shape. Allow to air dry.
