for Table Runner

Materials: For heavy-weight Table Runner:
1.4 mm steel crochet hook (Susan Bates size 8)
White, size 10 cotton crochet thread – allow 7 yds per 2¼-inch
motif plus additional thread for edging rows
For light-weight doily or scarf: 1.4 mm steel crochet
hook (Susan Bates size 8)
White, size 20 cotton crochet thread - llow 6 yds per 1¾-inch
motif plus additional thread for edging rows.
Ch = chain
YO = yarn over
sl st = slip stitch
SC = single crochet
DC = double crochet
TC = triple crochet (YO two times)
To start: Ch 8. Join with sl st in 1st chain
to form beginning ring.
Row 1: Ch 6. Work (DC, Ch 3) five times in beg
ring. Join at end of row with sl st in 3rd chain of beg Ch 6.
Row 2: Sl st into each of next 2 chains. Ch
3. Work (2 DC, Ch 4) in same space. Work (3 DC, Ch 4) in each
of next five Ch 3 spaces around. Join at end of row with sl st
in 3rd chain of beg Ch 3.
Row 3: *Ch 4. TC in same (joining) stitch. TC
in each of next 2 DC. Ch 2. Work 2 TC in next Ch 4 space. Ch 2.*
Repeat from * around, except work 2 TC in first TC in place of
first (Ch 4, TC). Join at end of row with sl st in 4th chain of
beg Ch 4.
Row 4: *Ch 4. TC in each of next 2 TC. Work
2 TC in next TC. Ch 3. Skip next Ch 2 space and next TC. SC in
next TC. Ch 3. Skip next Ch 2 space.* Repeat from * around, except
work TC in place of beg Ch 4. Join at end of row with sl st in
4th chain of beg Ch 4. Break off thread.
Repeat until enough motifs are made for desired size
of project. Original table runner contains 142 motifs. A 10-inch
lightweight doily can be made from 19 motifs (made of size 20
thread).
To sew together motifs: Holding right sides
together, whip-stitch motifs together on the back side at top
of the 5 TC’s, catching just one thread from each motif
per sewing stitch -- one motif will be surrounded by six additional
motifs.
Edging Row 1: SC in SC between two 5 TC groups.
*Ch 4. SC in next TC. Ch 4. Skip next 3 TC. SC in next TC. Ch
4. SC in next SC.* Repeat from * around, except SC in joinng seam
between two motifs as you would SC in a SC. Join at end of row
with (Ch 1, TC) in beg SC.
Edging Row 2: Ch 4. *SC in next Ch 4 loop, Ch
4.* Repeat from * around, joining at end of row with (Ch 4, SC)
in beg SC.
Edging Row 3: *Work (Ch 1, 2 DC, Ch 1) in next
Ch 4 space. SC in next SC.* Repeat from * around, except work
one SC in Ch 4 loop between 2 joined motifs (takes the place of
(Ch 1, 2 DC, Ch 1). SC in next SC. Resume pattern. At end of row,
join with sl st in beg SC. Break off thread.
Weave in and trim all loose ends. Hand wash in mild soap and
cool water, rinse well. Blot by rolling in a towel, then lay flat
on dry towel, smoothing and stretching to original size and shape.
Allow to air dry.
