The compilers share this text with the introduction: "This is a hsitory of the Frank Axtman family, was was written for the Frank Axtma Family Reunion at Rugby, ND on July 2-4, 1999. The book begins with a short history about Frank Axtman and his family and how he ended up in North Dakota. Next, there are 12 chapters representing each of the children of Frank Axtman, from the oldest to the youngest. These chapters includes a family tree for that child, except for the members of the religious orders, and a short history of the family members in that family tree. The last section consists of any stories submitted about the Axtman family.

The Axtmann family history begins in the small Catholic German Black Forest village of Völkersbach, Germany.  Frank Axtmann was born on August 9, 1871, the fifth child of Steffanus and Maria Axtmann. Frank Axtmann's great-grandparents, Martin and Marianna Mercklinger Axtmann, immigrated to South Russia in October, 1809, settling at Baden, a mother colony of the Kutschurgan District villages, today about one hour from Odessa, Ukraine. Frank Axtmann and his family immigrated to American arriving at the Port of New York on November 9, 1898. Traveling on to Eureka, in north central South Dakota, in May of 1899, these Axtmann families later settled in the Orrin area of Pierce County, North Dakota. On October 31, 1904, USA citizenship was granted to the Frank Axtmann family.
