Scripture Memory Cards
(not all cards are available as greeting cards)
The Germans from Russia Heritage Collection announces
the printing of a set of Scripture Memory Greeting cards. These
cards contain German Bible verse text on the front cover, with the
translation on the inside. The back cover contains the story of
these cards.
This Scripture Memory card Series, was given to Clara Kusler Mayer
in her Sunday school class at the Gnadenfeld Congregational Church
near Kulm, south-central North Dakota. Clara, the daughter of Germans
from Russia immigrants, was born in 1902 in Parkston, South Dakota.
Her parents came from villages near present-day Odessa, Ukraine:
Johann Kusler from Worms, Beresan District, and Magdalena Grosz
from Kulm, Bessarabia.
In March 1921, Clara Kusler married John Mayer in a double wedding
ceremony along with Clara's brother, Edward Christian Kusler, who
married John's sister, Carolina (Carrie) Mayer. Clara died in 1986
in Kulm, North Dakota.
This collection of memory cards featuring color lithography was
originally printed in New York before the 1920s. They were donated
by Clara's sister, Adeline Kusler McCloy, to the Germans from Russia
Heritage Collection in 2002.

Gnadenfeld German Congregational Church
Northwest 1/4 26 - 132-67 Roloff Township
McIntosh County, south central North Dakota
"In 1996, eighteen members organized the Gnadenfeld Church
under the leadership of Supt. George Albrecht and Pastor E. Jose
in the home of Gottlieb Schneiders. In the beginning, services were
held in the sod house of August Millers. For eight years following
that services were held at John Miller's home. By this time, the
congregation had grown to 34 members. In 1896, the members agreed
to build a new church nine miles southeast of Fredonia under the
leadership of Pastor Paul Burkhardt. Samuel and Karolina Fregien
donated the ground for the church, cemetery, and barn.
With lumber they purchased from Ellendale, ND, for $600, the members
donated their time to build a church building 24 by 36 feet. Gnadenfeld
Church was dedicated to the Lord in 1896 as the first German Congregational
Church in North Dakota. The Gnadenfeld Church celebrated its 50th
Anniversary in 1936 with Pastor Paul Burkhardt as a guest speaker.
Due to the small enrollment in the church, the members decided
to disband the services in 1953. The church and supplies were all
sold at a public auction. The building was moved to the Lee and
Alice Hollan farm in 1982."
The list of those who are buried at the Gnadenfeld Cemetery, can
be located in the book, Fredonia Centennial: 1904 - 2004,
page 46. The book is available for purchase at this website page:

A rare photo of district church conference with participants
of over fifty people hosted at Gnadenfeld Congregational Church,
circa 1940s, south of Kulm, in Roloff Township (R67W:T131N),

a granary at Robert (Bobbie) Hollan’s farm. This district
church conference photo was taken in front of church structure,
while a large canvas tent was erected from the conference attendees,
just behind the photographer. (Information received from Reverend
Horst Gutsche who was present at the conference as a child.
