Funeral Services Set for Former Bison Wrestler,
National Guardsman Lance Koenig

Former North Dakota State University student Lance Koenig, an All-America
wrestler for the Bison, was killed Sept. 22 by a bomb while on patrol
in Iraq as a member of the North Dakota National Guard.
Koenig, 33, was assigned to the Jamestown-based Company B of the
Guard's 141st Engineer Combat Battalion.
Funeral services have been set for 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30,
at Trinity Lutheran Church in Carrington, N.D. Visitation will be
Wednesday, Sept. 29, from 1 to 8:30 p.m. at Evans Funeral Home in
Carrington.
Koenig finished second in the NCAA Division II national tournament
as a sophomore and sixth as a junior. Koenig also won the North
Central Conference wrestling title as a senior in 1994, but injured
his knee in the semifinals of the national tournament.
In an interview with the Associated Press, wrestling coach Bucky
Maughan said, “Lance was one of the more successful North
Dakota wrestlers. Everybody liked Lance. He was just one of those
nice, easy going guys.”
Koenig, who lived in Fargo, is survived by his wife and two daughters,
ages 12 and 2.
