Former North Dakota State University student Lance Koenig, an All-America wrestler for the Bison, was killed Sept. 22 by a bomb while on patrol in Iraq as a member of the North Dakota National Guard.

Koenig, 33, was assigned to the Jamestown-based Company B of the Guard's 141st Engineer Combat Battalion.

Funeral services have been set for 2 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 30, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Carrington, N.D. Visitation will be Wednesday, Sept. 29, from 1 to 8:30 p.m. at Evans Funeral Home in Carrington.

Koenig finished second in the NCAA Division II national tournament as a sophomore and sixth as a junior. Koenig also won the North Central Conference wrestling title as a senior in 1994, but injured his knee in the semifinals of the national tournament.

In an interview with the Associated Press, wrestling coach Bucky Maughan said, “Lance was one of the more successful North Dakota wrestlers. Everybody liked Lance. He was just one of those nice, easy going guys.”

Koenig, who lived in Fargo, is survived by his wife and two daughters, ages 12 and 2.
