Day 2 – Friday, 16 May (Frankfurt, Germany)

  • 6:30-7:45 pm - Welcome dinner at Mercure Hotel
  • 7:45-8:30 pm - Presentation and questions providing historical background information about the sites to be visited on the tour

Day 3 – Saturday 17 May (Frankfurt, Germany and Odessa, Ukraine) Black Sea Hotel, Odessa, Ukraine

  • 4:30 am – Bus leaves from front of hotel to Terminal 1, Frankfurt Airport
  • 7:45 am – Departure on flight from Frankfurt to Vienna, Austria to Stuttgart, Germany (Austrian Airlines)
  • 9:15 am – Arrival at Vienna Airport
  • 10:40 am – Vienna to Odessa, Ukraine (Austrian Airlines)
  • 1:40 pm – Arrival at Odessa Airport
  • Travel by bus from Odessa Airport to Black Sea Hotel, 59 Rishelievskaya Street, Odessa. Check in at hotel
  • Meet Elvira Zakharova, travel consultant, expert in Russian History, at Odessa Airport
  • Rest in the afternoon at hotel
  • 5:15 pm – bus in front of hotel for travel to Opera House
  • 6:00 pm – Tour historic Odessa Opera House; topics include architecture, history and importance of Opera and the arts to the culture
  • 7:00pm - Odessa Opera House performance [ticket included with tour package]
  • Dinner on your own

Day 4 – Sunday, 18 May (Odessa, Ukraine) Black Sea Hotel, Odessa

  • 7:00 am– 8:30am – Breakfast buffet at hotel (included with tour package)
  • 8:45 am – Transportation at front of hotel for persons attending Mass at St. Peter's Catholic Church, Gavannaya Street 5. [services at 9:30 am, returning to hotel at 11:30 am] (Father Michael)
  • 9:15 am – Bus at front of hotel for departure to St. Paul's Lutheran Church
  • 10:00-11:15 am – St. Paul's German Lutheran Church Services (part of service in English)
    • Tour of historic church following service. Permanent exhibits and tour relating to the Germans from Russia and the villages surrounding Odessa
  • 12:15pm – Lunch on your own
  • 2:00 -6:00 :pm – Odessa City Tour with Elvira Zakharova, expert in Russian History. We will visit important historic sites in Odessa.
  • Evening dinner on your own

Day 5 – Monday, 19 May (Odessa, Ukraine) Black Sea Hotel, Odessa

  • 7:00 am – 8:15 am- Breakfast buffet at hotel (included with tour package)
  • 8:30 am – Transportation vehicles at front of hotel for persons traveling to German villages (sack lunch provided for persons visiting villages)
    • Visit ancestral villages with expert tour guides. You will gain important historical information regarding the landscape, architecture, culture and lifestyle of your ancestors as well as the current people. You will visit important historic sites including homes, churches, barns and root cellars. (Specific sites will be different depending on which villages you visit.)
  • Lunch on your own (if not visiting villages)
  • Dinner on your own

Day 6 – Tuesday, 20 May (Odessa, Ukraine) Black Sea Hotel, Odessa

  • 7:00 am – 8:15 am - Breakfast buffet at hotel
  • 8:30 am – Transportation vehicles at front of hotel for persons traveling to German villages (sack lunch provided for persons visting villages)
    • Visit ancestral villages with expert tour guides. You will gain important historical information regarding the landscape, architecture, culture and lifestyle of your ancestors as well as the current people. Day 7 – Wednesday, 21 May (Travel Day: Odessa - Vienna – Stuttgart, Germany)

  • 7:00 am – 8:30 am – Breakfast buffet at hotel (included with tour package)
  • Church in Kassel, Glückstal District, Ukraine
  • 8:30-11:30 – Tour member have time to relax and shopping.
  • 11:30 am – Lunch (on your own)
  • 12:30 pm – Bus departs for Odessa Airport from hotel
  • 3:00 pm – Odessa to Vienna (Austrian Airlines)
  • 4:00 pm – Arrive at Vienna Airport
  • 8:15 pm – Vienna to Stuttgart, Germany (Austrian Airlines)
  • 9:30 pm – Arrive at Stuttgart Airport
  • Binder Travel Bus meets tour members for transport to Wartburg Hotel, Stuttgart, Germany; (Each tour member responsible for own luggage using airport carts). Binder Travel arrangements by Bernhard Junker.

  • Bessarabia Museum, Stuttgart
  • 10:30 am – Visit Heimatmuseum der Deutschen aus Bessarabien (Bessarabian German Museum), Florianstrasse 17, 70188 Germany, Stuttgart [www.bessarabien.de] Tel: 0711-262-5481 [Ingo Isert, Curator]
    • Michael Miller presents about the relationship of the Bessarabian Germans to the Dakotas
    • Curator, Ingo Isert, gives presentation about the museum/library
    • Dr. Hugo Knoell, historian, gives tour and presentation
    • Welcome by Deacon Gunther Vossler, President
  • 12:00 pm -1:15 pm– Lunch at Heimatmuseum (not included with tour package) (Günther Vossler, President, joins the group)
  • 1:30 pm – Continue Stuttgart City Tour
    • Local historian, tour guide fascilitates the tour to significant sites, museums and monuments related to the Germans from Russia and their German ancestors
  • 5:00 pm – Return to hotel, rest of afternoon available for shopping near to hotel
  • Dinner on your own

Day 9 – Friday, 23 May (Seltz, Alsace, France)

  • 6:30 am - 7:30 am - Breakfast buffet (included with tour package)
  • 8:00 am - Binder Travel bus leaves for Seltz, Alsace, France tour stopping at city museum and architectural/historic sites
    • Raphael Chiantello, local historian, meets tour group at museum for tour and remains with the group throughout the morning in Seltz and is available for research questions
  • 12:30 pm - 2:00 pm - Lunch at Hotel-Restaurant, Goldenes Keuz, Sessenheim, Alsace, France [original Alsatian café serving Alsatian-German Flamkuchen] [lunch included with Alsace day tour]
    • Michael Miller presents about the significance of Seltz in the immigration of the Germans to South Russia (1804-1808)
  • 2:30 pm - 3:45 pm - From Sessenheim stop at the Alsatian pottery village of Soufflenheim, well known for glazed and colorful pottery.
  • 4:00 pm - Return to Stuttgart and hotel [persons not taking the Alsace day-tour on their own in Stuttgart]
  • Dinner on your own

Day 10 – Saturday, 24 May (Stuttgart, Germany) Hotel Wartburg, Stuttgart

Tour members are free to be on their own today in Stuttgart for site-seeing and shopping

  • 6:30 am – 10 am - Breakfast buffet (included with tour)
  • Information is provided about additional historic sites related to the Germans from Russia and their German ancestors and you are encouraged to visit these sites to further your educational experience
  • Optional, 9am-1pm: We will have a Binder Travel bus available to take tour members to the Mercedes-Benz Museum in Stuttgart. Cost for admission is 8 Euros for adults, 4 Euros if over 60 years old. There is a cafe and restaurant at the museum if you wish to get lunch here. Admission and lunch costs are on your own.
  • Optional, 1:30pm: Linden Museum, Stuttgart. This museum is within walking distance of our hotel (1/2 mile); this walk will bring you through the University of Stuttgart campus. Cost for admission to the permanent exhibit is 4 Euros. If you are visiting the Mercedes-Benz Museum, the Binder Travel bus can drop you off at the Linden Museum on the way back.
  • Lunch & dinner on your own

Day 11 – Sunday, 25 May (Stuttgart, Germany)

  • 7:00 AM – Departure from Stuttgart Airport on Binder Travel bus
