Wurttembergisches Gesangbuch, Stuttgart: Verlag der Evangelishen Buechersistung, 1860 (originally 1779), pages 174, [Old leather-bound German hymnal], owned by Friedrich Schauer in 1808 to Neudorf village (Glueckstal/Odessa), later at Ashley, North Dakota].

Dr. Homar Rudolf, 9 March 2011:

The background on this hymnal is that it is a 1860 edition of the Wuerttemberg Lutheran hymnal. The reason that there is a reference to 1779 on the title page is that there was a 1791 edition that was issued, and that edition deleted many of the Pietistic old hymns from earlier editions, and replaced them with new hymns whose text and music was more compatible wiht the Age of Enlightenment. At that time in Wuerttenberg there were many Pietists who continued to be active in the mainstream Lutheran Church in Wuerttemberg, as well as the Separatists who operated outside of that mainstream denomination. As you probably know, members of both groups immigrated to South Russia (the Separatists came in 1816, and some of them established the colony of Hoffnungstal, while others went on to Grusinia -- to be near Mt. Arafat). There were various reasons for families from Wuerttemberg to go elsewhere. There was a shortage of land, and the problem of Napoleon forcing the German rulers to supply him soldiers for his army. A third reason is that many of the mainline Lutherans, as well as the Pietists, were very upset about the new hymnal. When these two groups arrived in South Russia (including the Glueckstal Colonies) they continued to belong to the same Lutheran Church congregations, that were using a pre-1791 edition of the hymnal. Finally, in 1860, the officials in Stuttgart made the decision to reprint the 1779 edition, that included the old Pietistic hymns. In short order this hymnal was also republished in Odessa, so it was easily accessible to the G-R community in South Russia.
