Author Doreen Chaky will discuss her book Terrible Justice: Sioux Chiefs and U.S. Soldiers on the Upper Missouri, 1854-1868. They called themselves Dakota, but 16th century explorers and fur traders referred to them as Sioux, a corruption of the name enemies called them. Chaky's narrative history of the bloody battles of the mid-19th century offers the first complete picture of the conflicts on the Upper Missouri . She examines how northern, southern, and Minnesota bands all became involved in and were affected by battles with the U.S. Army, tying their story to the better-known history of the Oglala and Brule Sioux.
All are welcome to attend. Refreshments will be served.
