Institute for Regional Studies Archives
The Institute for Regional Studies Archives since its founding has made the collecting of North Dakota publications a priority, developing an impressive collection of over 23,000 volumes that touch on almost every facet of the state’s history. Strengths include North Dakota county, community, church, family, business and organization histories; atlases; periodicals; and works of fiction by North Dakota authors or fiction set in North Dakota. Also available are many titles on microfilm. The University Archives also maintains a separate collection of books and periodicals related to North Dakota State University. Included are undergraduate and graduate course catalogs, Agassiz and Bison annuals, telephone and alumni directories, annual budget and payroll volumes, and a wide variety of other NDSU related publications. A separate Lawrence Welk Publications Collection also is located at the Institute. It complements the extensive archival holdings at NDSU, documenting one of North Dakota’s famous native sons. All publications may be found in the online catalog.
University Archives Book Collection
The book collection of the University Archives deals primarily with publications by the university. These include budgets, directories, bulletins, yearbooks, Cooperative Extension publications, Agricultural Experiment Station publications, biennial reports, master plans, histories, and alumni directories. Many departmental and specialized publications are not cataloged, but are located as part of the records of the issuing university office.
In addition, the college newspaper, the Spectrum (1896-present) is available on microfilm.
Every effort is made to seek out titles to enhance our holdings, especially in areas deemed important by students and faculty for both current and future teaching and research. We welcome recommendations for items to purchase as well as new publications. Gifts of North Dakota related publications also are most welcome and appreciated. Donations must be within the scope of the Institute’s publications collection policy. All donations are formally acknowledged and gift plates are placed in each publication prior to it being cataloged. Recent donations are also acknowledged on our website.
The NDSU Libraries online catalog is the primary research tool in finding books and periodicals located at the Institute for Regional Studies Archives. To search for North Dakota related publications located at other libraries in the state consult the ODIN online catalog.
All books and periodicals are located in the Institute/Archives Research Room where you may use or browse the collection yourself. They do not circulate. The books are arranged in the Library of Congress classification system, the same as used at the NDSU Libraries. The reference staff is available to assist in your research needs. Copying facilities are available for both print and microforms.
