Strand Studio Photographs on Digital Horizons

Strand Studio on Digital Horizons
Collection finding aid

A sampling of images from the Strand Studio of Rugby, N.D. are now available on Digital Horizons. The Strand Family in 2009 entrusted the entire negative collection documenting the forty years that the studio was in business to the archives of the Institute for Regional Studies. The photographic work of Curtis and Maxine Strand is a wealth of visual resources related to the people and institutions of Rugby, N.D. and north central North Dakota. Also impressive is the fact that it spans forty years from 1948 when they established the studio until their retirement in 1988.

The collection consists primarily of portraiture, together with commercial photography for area businesses, schools, organizations and churches. Images of hundreds of weddings are documented in the collection as well as confirmations, high school graduates, babies, children and families. Strand’s work is not only a fantastic resource for photo researchers but also for families who are represented in the collection.

A listing to the collection’s contents is available online where you can browse the alphabetical listing by year and name or you can do a term search.
