Title: North Dakota Beef Commission Calf Scour Study 1975-77
Author: Strum, George E.; Haugse, Clayton N.
Description: In 1981, the disease 'calf scours' still claimed the lives of more calves than any other calf disease in the state of North Dakota. Calf losses appeared to be more when bad weather occurred before and after calving time. In 1975, the North Beef Commission requested that a study be made of calf scour losses. This was a statewide cooperative project between the North Dakota Beef Commission, the Cooperative Extension Service, veterinarians and livestock producers in selected areas of North Dakota and the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station. This article goes into detail on this project. Research seemed to indicate that management is a key factor in the prevention of scours. Various treatments were tried for this condition including the use of electrolytes.
