Title: Sunflower Midge -1982
Author: Busacca, J. D.; Kopp, D. D.
Description: The pest, the Sunflower midge, Contarinia schulzi Gagne, reduced sunflower yield starting in North Dakota in 1971. The infestation varied each year. Given the extensive damage that this pest can cause, it was deemed that an assessment need to be made. The first survey was made in 1981. In 1982, another survey was conducted. This one being much more comprehensive in scope, including geographic area, personnel and number of fields rated. The cause(s) of the shift of the moderate to severe areas in infestation from year to year was not uncovered in this survey and, thus, remained unclear. Seasonal changes in the environment: soil, moisture and tmeperature.
