Title: A Financial Profile of North Dakota's Farm Sector

Description: Historically, North Dakota's farm sector has experienced feast or famine financially. A brief history of this given. The role of the balance sheet in relation to the farm market is outlined. North Dakota's balance sheet for the farming industry from 1970-84 is discussed. From 1979-84, North Dakota's farming sector financial's financial condition deteriorated due to lower net farm income, increased dependency on borrowed funds coupled with higher interest rates. This restricted cash flow. Equity eroded which made farmers more sensitive to future instability in commodity prices and interest rates. Increased indebtedness restricts further expansion for servicing. Foreclosures may be resultant. Gaining farm loans may become less available. Local rural economies feel the ripple effect from the losses in the farm sector crippling their abilities to survive as well. Public services are negatively impacted likewise.
