dc.description By 1980, North Dakota had reached it's highest population level in 50 years with 652,717 individuals living in the state according to the US Census. This article breaks down population changes/shifts in several tables based on various axis. The 1970's OPEC oil strike boosted energy production in North Dakota. Those from rural areas tended to gravitate to urban areas causing population shifts. From 1970-8, migration and immigration patterns in North Dakota varied across the state.
