dc.description The introduction of sunflowers into crop rotations has accentuated soil erosion. These are planted in a row system which is generally causes much higher erosion than small grain crops. To lessen this effect, sunflowers must be placed in a rotation system that leaves adequaate residue on the soil surface to protect the soil against both wind and water erosion. Reduced tillage offers this alternative, but management systems that maximize production, minimize inputs and limit management problems need to be developed. This research was initiated at North Dakota State University in 1980. Plant growth, seed yield and nutrient content of sunflower were evluated in a 4 year crop rotation of pattern of barley-sunflower, barley-sugarbeet. The primary tillage treatments consisted of conventional Fall plow and 3 reduced tillage systems referred to as well Fall sweep, Fall intertill and no-till. The details and results of each are given.
