Title: A Field Scouting Strategy for the Red Sunflower Seed Weevil
Author: Brewer, Gary J.; Welss, Michael J.
Description: The 'red sunflower seed weevil' reduces yields of commercial sunflower crops in the Northern Great Plains. An average of of 12-15 of these weevil per head on a 25 head sample per field is the generalized insecticide treatment guideline for oilseed sunflower. This article presents a study that had the objective of was to determine the counting efficiency of of these two methods and, if necessary, to provide a correction factor which would allow for more reliable estimates of the absolute populations of red weevils. Next, the methods and materials for conducting this are given. Several factors influence the reliability of estimates of insect populations under field conditions. When a spray was used, sampling efficiency was more consistent over different red weevil populations when it was not used.
