dc.description In 1986, North Dakota was the second largest producer of potatoes in the US. At that time, an increase in Americans consuming potatoes was on the rise. Potato breeding continues to be one of the top priorities in the horticulture and plant pathology departments at the North Dakota State University. On March 1, 1987, the new potato variety, the Russet Norkotah, was released. It was developed by NDSU. This was the 14th potato variety released by the school. A brief history of this variety's development is given and it's characteristics. This variety is not only being grown in North Dakota, but in other states as well.
