Title: Tillage Effects on Bulk Density During Reclamation of Mined Soil

Description: About 2,000 acres are strip mined in the state of North Dakota each year. generally, the top layer of soils is scraped away and stockpiled elsewhere. Then, after mining activities have ceased, the soil is re-applied to the barren area. During this replacement of soil, the heavy machinery compacts the soil to various densities dependent upon it's texture and moisture content. The composition of the soil is different to varying degrees as compared to before. In 1987, a long-term study was initiated to learn if different tillage methods would reduce compaction of soil bulk density values during reclamation rather than waiting for problems to appear years later. The method by which this was conducted is outlined. From this study, two conclusions were drawn. No significant. The effects of tillage were negated by compacting by scrapers and graders. Treatments to reduce roughness and clods and to reduce rocks didn't significantly affect the bulk density. Tillage methods did not effectively reduce the compaction of the soil.
