dc.description Nitrogen has been the most often deficient element in North Dakota's production program. Nitrogen has traditionally been applied to the soil in Fall seasons or in the Spring before or during planting. Most researchers agreed that the best time to apply nitrogen is right before crop need. Growers interested in split application find foliar applied nitrogen solution to be the most efficient method to apply extra fertilizer. Field trials were established in 1985 and in 1986 to test the effect of foliar application of urea ammonium nitrate on yield and in the protein content of wheat. Foliar application of nitrogen did result in yield increases if the levels of nitrate nitrogen in the soil were insufficient for maximum plant yield. Grain protein did increase by this application. Foliar application should not exceed 40 pounds per acre to avoid lasting damage and decreased yields. Weather conditions and soil type affect yield results, also.
