Description: Production costs and erosion concerns have shifted planting systems towards reduced tillage. This shift has expanded the development of multiple use of tillage planting equipment which will operate in large quantities of residue. Pneumatic or air seed planters have developed as attachments to chisel plows and field cultivars for the tillage and seeding in the same operation. These offer the same advantage of large hoppers. Many questions remained relative to fertilizer application methods, rates and sources with these new seeding-fertilizing machines. A new study was conducted to study wheat seed germination with various spreader types as was influenced by the high rates of commercially available fertilizer materials and new experimental fertilizers being developed by the TVA National Fertilizer Development Center. This study is reviewed here. The effect of fertilizer rate on seed germination may vary from year to year dependent upon such things as soil moisture and soil temperature or quality of fertilizer material with respect to size and form. 'Tillering' was inversely related to stand loss. Grain yield is probably most closely related to soil test levels, the response to applied fertilizer and the climatic and soil moisture conditions which occur during the grain flowering and grain filling periods.
