Title: The Response of 13 Hard Red Spring and 5 Durum Wheat Cultivars to Wheat Streak Mosaic
Author: McMullen, Marcia; Timian, R.G.
Description: Front and Back CoverIn 1985, thirteen hard red wheat cultivars, varieties, and five durum wheat cultivars were tested for their reaction to wheat streak mosaic virus. Eastern North Dakota was experiencing the increase in winter whaat plantings which resulted in some isolated, very severe outbreaks of the the disease. This disease can be carried over into spring wheat crops. A study was conducted to better determine spring wheat cultivars which would prove more tolerant to the disease. Symptoms were greater in severity in all inoculated plots as compared to those observed in similar trials in 1983 and 1984. In these studies disease significantly reduced both crop yield and seed weight. To increase yield, it was recommended that farmers plant those crop varieties more resistant to this disease.
