dc.description On January 10th of 1984, the Director of the North Dakota Agricultural Experiment Station in cooperation with the Agricultural research Service, U.S. Department of Agriculture, announced the release of a new barley variety - 'Hazen' (P.I. 483238). The hybridization, selection and the development of the Hazen variety was performed at the North Dakota State University through the joint cooperation of several departments. The history, the agronomic characteristics of, the disease reaction of and the malting quality of of Hazen are discussed in this article. Tow years of pilots studies of scale malting and brewing tests conducted by the American Malting Barley Association collaborated the results of those by NDSU. If was cited that if Hazen malts and brews satisfactorily that it might be recommended for malting barley.
