Biography
Arthur Gray Leonard was born March 15, 1865 in Clinton, New York to Delevan Levant and Mary Louise (Raymond) Leonard. He would graduate in 1889 from Oberlin College and again in 1895 with his masters. He would go on to get his PhD from Johns Hopkins University in 1898. He would marry Katherine Minnie Gue in 1901. He would become the state geologist of North Dakota in 1903. He and Katherine would live in Grand Forks, North Dakota until his death on December 17, 1932. He is buried in Des Moines, Iowa.
The United States Geological Survey was created in 1879 by an act of Congress from a recommendation from the National Academy of Sciences. This recommendation came from the need to survey the lands added by the Louisiana Purchas and the Mexican-American war.
