Biography
Pauline Neher was born in a sod house on the North Dakota prairie in 1911. Her parents had immigrated to America from South Russia in 1909 and spoke only German. She attended two years of high school, and then transferred to the Dickinson Normal School, where she received a secretarial certificate. In 1960, she began collecting news items, interviewing pioneers, and writing articles for The Hebron Herald, a weekly newspaper in her community. Later, in 1977, she began to write a weekly column, “The Prairie Echoes.” In 1983, she published the first of five books, Homesteading on the Knife River Prairies, about her Germans-from-Russia ancestors. She followed that up with The Prairie Was Home (1986), Speaking Out…On Sodhouse Times (1985), North Dakota – In Grateful Homage (1989), The Prairie Echoes (1993), and Consider God’s Promises: My Christian Faith Journey (1996). Pauline Neher Diede died June 24, 2011 in Glen Ullin, North Dakota.
