Ira H. Criley was born in Pennsylvania in April 1872. In 1891 he was working for H. J. Lowry a photographer in Helena, Montana. In the 1900 census, he is working a photographer in Fargo.  At the time of the census he was residing at 307 1^st Avenue North with two other men, also listed as photographers, G.W. Stigleman and Al Smith.
