Troy Steam Laundry

The Troy Steam Laundry was established in December of 1881. It consolidated with the Fargo steam laundry in 1883 and the C.O.D. laundry in 1885. The business was located at 509 1st Avenue North, when it was destroyed by the fire of 1893. The business was rebuilt at 631 N.P. Avenue. Apparently this building was bought by the Key City Laundry, and the Troy Laundry moved several buildings to the east, at 625 N.P. Avenue.
According to the 1901 Fire Festival Souvenir Booklet, Mr. Arthur Bassett was the proprietor and "this 'old reliable' establishment is thoroughly equipped with the most approved laundering machinery, wash, drying, and ironing rooms, and the facilities are the best for turning out the finest class of work, where special care is used in every branch of the business. Work is done here without the use of chemicals that rot and destroy goods of fine texture, and the wear and tear of clothes is thereby obviated. A specialty is made of collars, cuffs, shirts, and fine family work, and quick service is rendered. Mr. Bassett has reduced the laundry business to a scientific basis in his establishment, using special machinery, he secures that nicety and exactness in every detail, which has won for him the reputation of doing work unsurpassable elsewhere."
Arthur Bassett was the proprietor of the business until about 1909, when it was taken over by Andrew Headland and Henry Emmons. The business is last listed in the Fargo city directory in 1911.
