Fargo Public Library

Fargo's public library started in 1900 as a room in the Masonic Temple with books donated by individuals and clubs.

Fargo's Public Library stood on the northeast corner of Roberts Street and First Avenue North. This was the site of the former Columbia Hotel which was destroyed in the fire of 1893. Aided by funding from the Andrew Carnegie, the new library opened January 26, 1903.

The image to the right shows the interior of the library. The photographer is standing in the main reading room on the corner of the building with his back to Second Avenue. The entrance is to the photographer's right. Looking straight ahead we can see the main desk of the library and the book stacks behind it. Thanks to David Smith for the image.

An addition was added in 1930 that nearly doubled the size of the library. The addition was to the rear of the building on the Roberts street side.
