Veterans' Hospital
The Veterans Administration purchased 50 acres in 1926 adjacent to the Red River north of Fargo. The new 59-bed hospital opened in June 1929 with Dr. Nils Tronnes as first chief surgeon. The original hospital is pictured in the postcard above.
The two photographs below were taken June 30 1929 and likely depict the ceremonies associated with the opening of the hospital. The photographs were provided by Brad Graber. Thank you!
A north wing was added in 1932, raising bed capacity to 100. A south wing was added in 1938, raising capacity to 176 beds. The postcard at right, shows both new wings and describes the hospital with 184 beds and "an efficient team of doctors and nurses."
In the postcard to the lower right, two additional floors have been added to the hospital and the wings expanded. A postcard similar to the this describes the hospital as a 400-bed facility.
