Since May 22, 1996 a group organized by the North Dakota State University has been paying an annual visit to the Bessarabian Heimatmuseum. On May 24, 2018 another such group of thirty-two travelers, led by Michael Miller and Jeremy Koop, arrived. Michael Miller is the Director of the Germans from Russia Heritage Collection (GRHC) in the North Dakota State University Library, and Jeremy Koop is responsible for the organization’s special exhibits.

[Bessarabian German Association] chair Günther Vossler welcomed the group as brothers and sisters. He told of his fine memories of his visit with relatives in North Dakota and his participation at the GRHS International Convention in Bismarck, North Dakota in July, 2012.

Miller then took the floor: “I have very good memories of these museum visits, which began in the 1980s, at the time with Christian Fieß, then with Ingo Isert, and now with Gunther Vossler. This wonderful partnership between the Bessarabian German Heimatmuseum and GRHC has lasted over forty years. We warmly invite our Bessarabian brothers and sisters to visit us in the US, and we are already looking forward to our 23rd Homeland Tour and a visit here in May of 2019.”

Between May 18 and May 23, the current group traveled to Odessa in Ukraine and to former Bessarabian villages such as Brienne, Friedenstal, Gnadental, Krasna, Paris and Sarata. Homeland Tour participants come from Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Idaho, Illinois, North Dakota, South Dakota, Washington, and Wisconsin in the US and from Alberta, Canada and even Scotland.

Group participants’ surnames have included: Baumgartner, Bauer, Becker, Bitz, Dockter, Doll, Dueschle [sic], Dyck, Engel, Erhardt, Eszlinger, Fischer, Fink, Freilich, Garman, Gerhardt, Getz, Giesinger, Gietzen, Gisi, Heintz, Kreidel, Kroeger, Kuntz, Iszler, Levi, Lipp, Müller, Nagel, Neu, Renner, Roth, Rudolph, Sahli, Salzer, Sauer, Schell, Schumacher, Schwenk, Seidel, Teskey, Tuschscherer, Vogel, Volk, Wagner, Weinberger, Weisbeck, Weissenburger, Weninger, Wenz, Wetzel, Wieser, Wolf and Wolfe.
