As the official yearly statistics in the table indicate, provided by the Federal Administrative Office, the number of Spaetaussiedler [resettlers = emigrants who have been arrving late, that is, in recent years] decreased drastically in the past year.
While during the year 2005 there were still as many as 35,522 Spaetaussiedler,
during the year 2006 there were only 7,747, and these arrived nearly
exclusively from succesor states of the former Soviet Union. Thus
the trend indicated in previous years is continuing at a higher
rate, and meanwhile it has come down to numbers of Ausssiedlern
we had not seen for 20 years. (We
reported in the November, 2006 issue, p. 4, fo example, on reasons for these reductions, which are primarily attributable to regulations in new immigration laws.)
