Schwahn Family Gathers for Bismarck Reunion

"Schwahn Family Gathers for Bismarck Reunion." Emmons County Record, 25 November 2010, 22.

Descendants of the late Anton and Rosalia (Hager) Schwahn gathered in Bismarck on August 7-8, 2010, for their second Schwahn Family Reunion. Approximately 160 people attended the two-day event.

Anton Schwahn was born in Russia on January 7, 1877. He grew up there and immigrated to the United States arriving in New York in March of 1898. Rosalia Hager was born on June 9, 1879, in South Russia. She immigrated to the United States where Rosalia and Anton were married on July 14, 1901, at Sts. Peter and Paul Church which was located in what was then known as Tiraspol, an area a couple of miles north of the present day Strasburg.

Anton and Rosalia (Hager) Schwahn farmed five miles west of Strasburg. The family eventually grew with nine children being born to this union. The children were Mary (Schwahn) Jahner; Leopold Schwahn, John Schwahn, Barbara (Schwahn) Lacher, Ottilia Schwahn (died at 9 months of age), Jacob Schwahn, Ottilia (Schwahn) Jochim, Magdalena (Schwahn) Feist and Cecilia (Schwahn) Paul. Cecelia Paul, who is the only living child of Anton and Rosalia was present at the reunion and was the special guest of honor.

The reunion began on Saturday morning, August 7, with a Schwahn Family Golf tournament at the Tom O’Leary Golf Course in Bismarck. On Saturday afternoon the gathering continued at the Eagles Club in Bismarck with registration and an informal gathering of relatives to exchange greetings and hugs and to make “maistube.” A Polka Mass celebrated by Father Jerome Kautzman at 4 p.m. was the more formal opening of the gathering. The music leaders for the Mass were Victor Schwahn and Priscilla Paul.

A short social followed the Mass and dinner also followed the mass. To begin the evening’s activities, a short program was held. During this program, the golf tournament awards were presented and everyone in attendance was introduced. The day was very colorful because the descendants of each the children of Anton and Rosalia were assigned different colors to wear. Saturday ended with more reminiscing, dancing, playing cards, and singing. The evening’s accordion music was provided by Victor Schwahn.

At noon on Sunday, the reunion attendees gathered once more, this time at Sertoma Park, for a picnic. The picnic offered the Schwahn family time together to share more memories, to play some cards, to eat some good food, and to say good-byes. The next Schwahn Family Reunion weekend will be held during the summer of 2015.
