Fr. Augustine Fox Dies at Dickinson

Fr. Augustine Fox, O.S.B., for almost 20 years pastor at SS. Peter and Paul’s church at Strasburg, passed away last Saturday, Nov. 8, at St. Joseph’s hospital in Dickinson.

Fr. Augustine resigned his Strasburg pastorate last March. He had served there since 1927. He had been residing in retirement in the cloister of Assumption Abbey in Richardton.

The beloved priest, who was 72 years old last April, was born in Weinsheim, Thrier, Germany, on April 7, 1875. He studied at the famous thousand-year-old abbey at Einsideln, Switzerland, where he was ordained to the priesthood on June 9, 1906.

Soon after his ordination he came to America where he held pastorates at St. Anthony’s, Glen Ullin, Karlsruhe, Devils Lake, and Strasburg, all in North Dakota.

Fr. Augustine’s accomplishments and his rare gifts fitted him for positions of importance, among them Rector of Assumption Abbey school at Richardton from 1920 to 1924, and professor of history at St. John’s university at Collegeville, Minn., from 1924 to 1926.

During his long service at SS. Peter and Paul’s of Strasburg, Fr. Augustine gained the love and respect of the entire community. Left behind as memorials are many of his fine paintings to which he gave much of his time and talent.

A High Pontifical Mass was celebrated for Fr. Augustine by the Rt. Rev. Cuthbert Goeb, O.S.D., president of Assumption Abbey school. The body was interred Nov. 12 at the cloister at Richardton.
