Obituary of Bernd G. Längin
Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over........ he became a butterfly. It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Bernd G. Längin on Saturday, June 28, 2008 at the Riverview Health Centre at the age of 67. He is survived by his wife Christiane of 43 years, his daughter Marion with husband Jeff (Bueckert), his grandsons Kyren and Max. Also left to mourn is Bernd's family in Germany, his sister Gisela, his mother-in-law, Ingeborg Sautter, his sisters-in-law Heidelore (with HansJoerg), Gisela (with Arno), his niece Nicole and numerous aunts, uncles and cousins. In addition to his family he leaves behind countless wonderful friends. Bernd began his life in Karlsruhe, Germany. It was there that he pursued his life passion...... to research, to report and to write. His early 20s took him to Namibia, Africa to become the editor of the German newspaper in Windhoek. It was there where his wife Christiane gave birth to their daughter Marion. He spoke of Africa often and with fondness. Bernd's 30s found him in Winnipeg, Manitoba once again becoming editor of a German language newspaper, the Courier Nordwesten, later Kanada Kurier. Here he connected with lifelong friends, many of whom shared his fondness and his roots to his beloved Germany. As the years marched on, Canada etched its beauty into Bernd's heart which became his permanent home. He travelled the world many times over and dedicated his life to the impact that leaving Europe and Germany in particular had on its many emigrants. He had a very particular interest in the Hutterite, Amish and Mennonite communities, and he cherished the friendships that grew out of his research of them. Bernd wrote over 24 books in his lifetime. Many of them can be found on the shelves of Universities throughout the world. Bernd, always a wonderful story teller, was blessed to be able to spend his life doing the things that he greatly loved and he shared his passion with anyone who would take interest. He will be greatly missed by all that knew him. In compliance with Bernd's wishes, no formal funeral services will be held. Family and friends are invited to a Celebration of Life held in Bernd's memory on Wednesday, July 9, 2008 at 3:00 p.m. at Pineridge Hollow, 67086 Heatherdale Road, (North of Garven Road). Please bring with you your precious memories and we will laugh and cry together. His family wishes to extend the deepest of thanks to the caring staff at CancerCare Manitoba, with special thanks to Nurse Cheryl and also Michelle. And thank you to the very compassionate and helpful staff at Riverview Health Centre... Our deepest gratitude is extended to Dr. Bshouty, Dr. Lau and to Dr. Nyhoff.
