Death of Lena Heitzman Paris
University Libraries, Fargo, September 15, 2004
It is with much sadness that I inform you of the death of our dear friend and colleague, Lena Paris. Lena's daughter, Brenda, informed me that they found Lena at her north Fargo apartment on Tuesday afternoon. I had spoken with Lena about 11 am on Monday morning, 13 September. She mentioned that she was not feeling well and would not be coming to work on Monday.
Lena officially began part-time work on 1 June 1993 with the Germans from Russia Heritage Collection, NDSU Libraries. She had worked with GRHC in 1991 and 1992 as part of the AARP Senior Employment Program. Lena grew up on a farm in central North Dakota near McClusky. Her parents were immigrants from Germany and from South Russia (near Odessa, Ukraine). Lena grew up speaking both the English and German languages.
Lena provided valuable work especially with oral history transcription. She was very detailed with with her data-entry and skill in know some of the German dialect words. Lena would also prepare articles for the GRHC website with outstanding proofreading/editing work. Many of Lena's oral history transcriptions appear at the GRHC website.
A tribute of her work appears in the Bob Lind's article about Lena Paris which appeared in The Forum, 27 June 2004 - library.ndsu.edu/grhc/articles/newspapers/news/paris.html
Lena who was 86 in March, would mention to me how she enjoyed coming to work and being with the library staff. In many ways she was a role model for the contributions of a senior citizen with her positive and friendly personality. When I informed Lorrettax Mindt on Tuesday of the loss of Lena, she mentioned that Lena was our "cheerleader" here at the Library.
There will be Visitation for Lena Paris from 4 pm to 7 pm, Thursday, 16 September, at the Korsmo Funeral Home, 409 South 8th Street, Moorhead.
Lena's Memorial Services will be on Friday, 17 September, at Community Baptist Church, 3535 25th Street South, Fargo, 10:30 am.

Lena Paris will be truly missed as a very special lady and a beloved
