Glueckstal Colonies Research Association (GCRA) Archives at the GRHC

The GCRA Archives have been established at the NDSU Libraries' Germans from Russia Heritage Collection (GRHC) to serve primarily as a research collection for individuals involved in genealogical research on families once resident in the Glückstal Colonies of South Russia.

PURPOSE OF GCRA: The Purpose of the Glückstal Colonies Research Association is twofold. The first is to coordinate the efforts of individuals researching the Glückstal Colonies. The second is to locate, gather, organize and access all sources pertaining to the Glückstal colonies of Bergdorf, Glückstal, Kassel and Neudorf, and their daughter colonies.

The Archive consists of general files for individual family surnames, and individual files for members of GCRA and other researchers. The contents of files vary considerably, and consist primarily of information the includes genealogical content, or biographical and historical information regarding surnames, and specific families or individuals.

All photographs and images of documents contributed for the 2004 book The Glückstalers in New Russia and North America: A Bicentennial Collection of History, Genealogy & Folklore and the 2008 book The Glückstalers in New Russia, the Soviet Union, and North Americas are included on the discs accompanying the books (CDs – 2004 book; DVD – the 2008 book). All hard copies and images on discs contributed for these projects have been added to individual files, however, images received as email attachments are not included in the files.

In addition the Archive contains a significant number of family books, as well of books of general interest in the history, culture and folklore of the Germans from Russia. Click to search the NDSU Libraries' Online Catalog for a complete listing.

The research collection of the GRHC includes copies of all GCRA Newsletters (2 issues per year; Vol. 23 issued in 2010). These Newsletters are an important source of genealogical information, translations of letters, and original documents (with commentary), cemetery lists, newspaper extractions, and extractions of Declarations of Intent, (Census records), etc. for various areas (primarily in the Dakotas).
