The Free Spirit Heritage of the German-Russian People

Review by Vi Schielke, Beulah, North Dakota

Raabe, Hazel Udseth. The Free Spirit Heritage of the German-Russian People. Watertown, South Dakota: Interstate Publishing Company, 1989.

This book covers excellent condensed sections: history of Russian land policy; who was the immigrant; the exodus to the Black Sea; the German colonist in Russia, the fate of a brave people; new world settlements; and some German proverbs. To a novice who wants to research an understanding of the Germans from Russia the articles are a great beginning.

The interview of Mr. and Mrs. Fred (Rosina Fiechtner) Bauman (parents of Clarence Bauman, [past] President of the Germans from Russia Heritage Society) are interesting not only to the Bauman family, but to any person who wants to know what it was like in the homesteading days in the Dakotas for our parents and grandparents of the Germans from Russia.
