The article offers information of the feeding value of different oat varieties to livestock. Any differences in feeding value of oats would have obvious implications concerning variety selection for planting and feeding by livestock producers. A preliminary investigation using the growing rat as the experimental animal was conducted with three varieties of oats. Oat varieties grown in North Dakota may be grouped into three broad categories: high yield, low protein, average yield and protein and low to average yield, high protein. The data reported here indicate that varieties of oats differ in their gross nutritive value as determined with growing rats. These differences were apparent for performance data (average daily gain and feed per pound of gain) as well as for digestibility of ration.
