Ergot: A Recurring Problem of Grasses and Small Grainsen_US
Articleen_US
The article addresses the recurring problem of grasses and small grains, which was infection of hard red spring wheat by the ergot fungus, Claviceps purpurea. A history and description of this plant disease is given. The ergot fungus is endemic to the Northern Plains of North America and it affects grasses each year in a region extending roughly from the Kansas area in the south through the prairie provinces of Canada to the north. The life cycle of ergot, what happens in storage, how to remove it, how to solve the problem, the crop in 1972 and several courses of action for future crops are discussed.
