Response of Old Crested Wheatgrass Stands to Nitrogen Fertilizer in Western North Dakotaen_US
Articleen_US
By 1957, many crested wheatgrass stands in western North Dakota were established for 15 to 20. Many of these were still in use and good condition. There was good evidence that the productivity of these old stands could be improved by application of nitrogen fertilizer. To determine the nature and magnitude of the response that might be expected from nitrogen applications to old crested wheatgrass stands in western North Dakota, a fertilizer trial was started at the Dickinson Experiment Station in 1951. It is this trial that is discussed in this eight page article. The trial showed that forage and seed production were both increased with nitrogen fertilizer, but that responses were uncertain and not economical at higher application rates. Also, that moisture content played a part in increases.
