Originally published in Historia de la composicion del cuerpo humano ... Rome, Antonio Salamanca, y Antonio Lafrerij. 1556. Figure XXX is of a pregnant woman with her anterior abdominal wall opened to reveal her pregnant uterus (L), and was not copied from Vesalius. It also depicts the surface of the uterine surface of the placenta (XXXI and XXXII) as well as the isolated placenta and vasculature (XXXIII and XXXIIII). These images were taken while preparing a book (Wombs with a View, Springer, 2016) on the history of the illustrations and how they contributed to our understanding of anatomy and physiology of pregnancy, thereby enabling advances in the practice of obstetrics and gynecology.
