Overcoming: An Architectural Response: Study of Architectural Settings that Transition Individuals to Adulthood
Abstract
What role do architectural programs and architectural elements
play in helping individuals overcome liminal conditions on the
pathway to adulthood? This research report will frame student
learning in a college environment on the basis of overcoming liminal
conditions associated with becoming an adult. Research involves
recognizing and analyzing spaces and architectural elements that
can help individuals gain the needed and important skills necessary
to moving into the next stage of their lives with ease. The
results will be helpful in developing spaces for higher education
while supporting higher education's main objective of being a
transitional period to produce individuals ready to be productive
members of their professions and communities. Designing to overcome
liminal conditions focuses on a building's ability to impact the
development of an individual's identity, understand their newly
appointed responsibilities, and overcome psychological loss often
found when moving from one period of your life to another. As
designers we should always take into account the impact that our
design decisions can have on the lives of occupants and users of
a building.
