dc.description | Sunflower oil forms a solid insoluble film, called polymerize, in the auto industry. It is referred to as gum, varnish or gum. This makes it's usage for diesel fuel a disadvantage. Extensive research has been conducted on the varnish forming properties of vegetable oils. Sunflower oil is highly unsaturated or polyunsaturated. It has superior film forming properties due to it's being unsaturated. Conditions which are required for polymerization to a hard, insoluble varnish are: high temperature, oxygen rich temperature, presence of metal catalysts, sulphur in diesel fuel and extended drying time. Several alternatives, those involving non-drying oils, should be considered. To eliminate oxidation, literally thousands of antioxidants have been identified. However, the massive amounts required would be cost prohibitive. An antioxidant would eliminate thermal polymerization. | |
