Abstract

Description

A 12 year period of measured solar radiation data (each period - May - Sept) was utilized to develop calibration constants (monthly and seasonal) for an empirical relationship that estimates solar radiation from inputs of maximum and minimum air temperatures. Regression testing indicated that a seasonal calibration constant could be utilized in this relationship to achieve coefficient of determination of .76 for solar radiation estimates over weekly time periods with standard error of estimate of about 37 Langleys per day. Comparison tests of measures vs estimated ET rates were made for 3 seasons not utilized in the calibration period. Checkbook=-like tables were developed to illustrate the use of this temperature based method for estimating daily solar radiation amounts and the subsequent estimation of daily ET data.
